The best AI tools for automating your work: n8n vs Make vs Zapier vs Lindy
Workflow builders and AI agent platforms overlap more every month. Here is how to pick one without paying for the wrong kind of tool.
Best overall: n8n (86/100). Powerful AI agent workflows, a free self-hosted edition and the best value at scale. Try n8n
"Automate my work with AI" can mean two different things. One is a workflow: when X happens, do Y and Z, with an AI step in the middle to summarize, classify or draft. The other is an agent: give the AI a goal and some tools, and let it decide the steps. n8n, Make and Zapier started as workflow tools and have added agents. Lindy and CrewAI started with agents. We rank all five on the same public 0–100 score in our AI agents & automation ranking, whose standard task is building an agent that triages an inbox and posts a daily summary.

Who each tool is for
1. n8n
n8n is a visual workflow builder with AI agent and MCP nodes. You can use n8n Cloud, priced by workflow executions, or self-host the Community edition for free under its fair-code license. It has the highest fit score in our AI agents & automation ranking, and it ties Make for the best value score among the workflow tools.
Who it's for: developers, ops and technical marketers who want AI steps inside real workflows, need control over where data lives, or run enough volume that per-task pricing elsewhere gets expensive. Who it's not for: people who want to be done in ten minutes. n8n has the lowest ease score of the workflow tools here, and self-hosting means you run the server.
Try n8n ↗2. Make
Make builds automations as visual "scenarios" you can see branch and loop on a canvas, and it now includes AI steps. Pricing is credit-based, with the lowest paid entry point of the tools here.
Who it's for: ops people and builders who want more logic than a simple trigger-action flow, on a budget. Who it's not for: teams that want to self-host, or complete beginners who might find the canvas busier than Zapier's step list.
Try Make ↗3. Zapier
Zapier is the default no-code automation tool. It connects thousands of apps with "Zaps", and now adds Tables, Forms, AI agents and chatbots. It has the highest ease and trust scores in this group.
Who it's for: non-technical teams that need to connect common business apps fast, and anyone who wants the widest choice of integrations. Who it's not for: high-volume or cost-sensitive workflows. It has the lowest value score of the workflow tools here, and paid plans start at $19.99 a month.
Try Zapier ↗4. CrewAI
CrewAI is an open-source Python framework for orchestrating teams of AI agents, with a hosted platform and visual editor on top. The framework is free; the hosted Basic plan includes 50 executions a month.
Who it's for: developers building custom multi-agent systems in code. Who it's not for: non-developers. It has the lowest ease score in this group.
Try CrewAI ↗5. Lindy
Lindy takes a different approach: instead of drawing a workflow, you set up AI agents and assistants that handle tasks such as email, scheduling and meeting notes, without code. It's closer to hiring an assistant than wiring up a pipeline.
Who it's for: founders and ops people whose bottleneck is inbox, calendar and meeting follow-up. Who it's not for: anyone who needs predictable, rules-based automations at volume. Pricing is usage-based, starting with $50 of free credits for 7 days and then a Team plan at $49.99 a month for 5,000 credits.

How to choose
Start from the job, not the tool
Write down one task you do every week, the apps it touches and what "done" looks like. "Every new lead in the form gets enriched, scored and posted to Slack" is a workflow. "Read my inbox, draft replies and book meetings" is closer to an agent.
Match the tool to who will maintain it
The person who fixes the automation when it breaks matters more than who builds it. If that's a non-technical teammate, Zapier's ease score is worth its higher price. If it's an engineer, n8n's flexibility and self-hosting pay off.
Do the volume math
A workflow that runs a few times a day is cheap anywhere. One that runs thousands of times a month can cost very different amounts depending on how each platform counts usage. That's where n8n and Make's value scores come from.
Keep a human in the loop for agents
Agents that send email or change records should start in "draft" or "ask before acting" mode. Expand their permissions only after they've been right for a while.
A simple starter setup
- Pick one weekly task and build it in the free plan of the tool that matches your team.
- Add one AI step, such as summarizing, classifying or drafting, rather than handing the whole task to an agent on day one.
- Log every run to a sheet or table for the first two weeks so you can spot errors.
- Only then add a second workflow, or an agent like Lindy for the messy inbox and meeting work.

Our verdict
n8n is our top pick for teams that can handle a technical tool: it leads on fit, ties for the best value among workflow tools and has a free self-hosted edition. Zapier is the safest choice for non-technical teams, Make is the budget visual builder, and Lindy is the one to try if what you really want is an AI assistant rather than a workflow.
